The Summary Table Below shows information from water withdrawal
reporters in the Roanoke Drought Evaluation Region grouped by
water use type. Please note that this information reflects water
withdrawal reporting data submitted to DEQ for calender years 2021-2025.
The use type category total volumes are reported in millions of gallons
per day (MGD).
Drought Evaluation Regions are based on Virginia
locality borders. The column for “Outside watershed withdrawal” reflects
the reported 2021-2025 average water use for each category that comes
from outside the given watershed, but is included in the drought
evaluation region.

Agricultural water use includes non-irrigation
withdrawals for livestock, poultry, and fish farms.
Commercial water use includes golf courses,
universities, hotels, resorts, and other similar entities.
Industrial water use includes industrial operations
such as chemical and plastics manufacturing, paper mills, food
processors, industrial cooling water, and other industrial related
withdrawals.
Irrigation water use includes
withdrawals for farms irrigation crops such as corn, soybeans, sod, as
well as nursery products
Mining water use includes
withdrawals for operations such as sand and gravel, stone, and coal
mining.
Power Generation water use includes water
withdrawn for fossil fuel power and nuclear power. Withdrawals or
diversions of water for hydroelectric power generation are nearly all
non-consumptive and are exempt from the annual water withdrawal
reporting requirements.
Public water supply
withdrawals include water delivered to domestic users by both municipal
and non-municipal community water systems, and water delivered to
commercial and industrial customers by water suppliers
